Microsoft officially gives up on fitness wearables as it stops selling the Band 2

Today Microsoft has stopped selling the Band 2 fitness wearable. Furthermore, the company has removed all traces of this product from its online store. The Band SDK isnt online anymore either.

For a while now its been rumored that the company would not ever release a Band 3, and that in fact its given up on making its own fitness bands. The team behind the Band and Band 2 has also reportedly moved on to other projects.

Microsoft still wont admit its completely given up on wearables, at least for now, but it did issue the following statement on the situation:

We have sold through our existing Band 2 inventory and have no plans to release another Band device this year. We remain committed to supporting our Microsoft Band 2 customers through Microsoft Stores and our customer support channels and will continue to invest in the Microsoft Health platform, which is open to all hardware and apps partners across Windows, iOS, and Android devices.

Apparently Microsoft will focus on software in this space in the future, so expect a bigger push of its Health platform, working alongside hardware from many different vendors. Lets all observe a moment of silence for the short lived Microsoft Band hardware experiment then.
